Attendance PoliciesAbsencesTo clear your student's absences, call the appropriate number below:
The staff at SLZ ranks attendance and punctuality high on its list of priorities. We believe that in order to receive the full benefits of quality education, students should attend all classes each and every time they meet. School Board Policy 504 states, "Parents/Guardians of children between the ages of six and eighteen are responsible for sending their children to school full-time." The State of California mandates that all children attend school until they reach the age of 18. Our Attendance Office is location in A-Hall (the part of the main building closest to Lewelling Boulevard) next to the Main Office. The Attendance Office is open and Attendance clerks are available from 7:30 to 3:15 p.m. Teachers take attendance each class period and forward attendance data to the Attendance Office within these hours. Re-admittance to school following an absenceCalifornia State Law requires that a student's parent or guardian explain every absence from school. A major portion of school's funding from the state is based on student attendance. Therefore, our school must make every effort to have every absence explained and cleared by the legal parent or guardian. Whenever a student is absent from school, his/her parent or guardian (whose signature is on the student's verification form) must call the school on the first day of an absence to report the absence from school. Students who have been absent from class/school are required to clear their absence by either a phone call or a note from their parent or guardian. All notes submitted to the Attendance Office must include he following information:
Upon returning to school from an absence, all students must report directly to the Attendance Office to receive their re-admittance slip. All attendance matters should be taken care of before school begins. The student should arrive in the Attendance Office no later than 8:00 a.m. Arrival in the Attendance Office after 8:00 a.m. will result in the student being tardy to his/her first block class. No student will be re-admitted to class without an admit slip. If a note or phone call has not been received to clear a student's absence on the date of his/her return, the absence will be marked "unexcused/cut." In order to clear an "unexcused/cut," a parent/guardian must contact the Attendance Office within 48 hours of the last date of absence. If the "unexcused/cut" is not cleared by the parent/guardian within the 48 hour time limit, the "unexcused/cut" will become a "cut" for the day(s) or class(es) missed. This "cut" remains on the student's record and cannot be changed after the time limit. According to California State Law, once submitted the cut cannot be changed. Unexcused absences, cuts, and tardiesUnexcused absences, cuts, and tardies reflect a lack of interest and effort on the part of the student. This type of behavior is not acceptable and will result in disciplinary action. Attendance of 18-year-old studentsWhen a student turns 18, he/she is no longer required by compulsory education statutes to attend school. An 18-year-old may withdraw and apply to attend an adult school, a community college, or enter the full-time work force. An 18 year-old student who elects to remain at SLZ will, therefore, be "volunteering" to continue to abide by all school policies, specifically including attendance and the need for parents to clear absences. If the parent of an 18-year-old initiates a contact with the school administration to request that their child be solely responsible for clearing his/her absences from school, we will abide by that request. If the parent believes that his/her child is mature enough to handle that responsibility, we will also consider ourselves relieved of the obligation to notify parent(s) in case of truancy, misbehavior, suspension, program change, or progress report in class. Impact of AbsencesExcused AbsenceCalifornia State Law accepts only the following reasons for an excused absence:
Absences of more than three days for religious holiday may be excused by prior written persmission from the principal. Makeup: One day is allowed for makeup work for each day missed. The STUDENT must initiate the request for makeup work. Impact on Grade: Because of the inability to participate in class, a student may not be able to receive the full benefit of the learning activities presented and the grade may suffer as a result. Unexcused AbsenceThese are all absences for which we do have a parent note, but the absence is NOT excused (see list above). This includes parent-approved absences due to:
Grades may be lowered, per each teacher's policy, on the 3rd, 4th, & 5th of these absences by 1/3 each, but not more than one full letter grade and not to reflect an "F " grade. Makeup: At teacher's discretion. Impact on Grade: Three unexcused absences will lower the earned semester grade by one-third. Example: Dropped from B to a B-, or from C- to D+. Each additional unexcused absence will lower the student's grade by an additional one-third. SuspensionSuspensions are unexcused absences from school that a student has earned by violating the district's discipline policy. Makeup: Permitted at discretion of teacher. Impact on Grade: Loss of instruction and assigned work presented during the time absent. CutA cut is a truant absence that cannot be legally excused, and is determined at the discretion of the attendance clerk. Makeup: Permitted at discretion of teacher. Impact on Grade: Each cut will lower the earned semester grade by one-third, but a student who would otherwise pass cannot have grade lowered to an "F" merely for absences. |
