Peer Conflict Management

SLz is proud of it's Peer Conflict Management Program. The purpose of the program is to train students in conflict resolution skills and then allow them to be a resource to fellow students in seeking peaceful resolutions to the conflicts that occasionally arise in a school environment. The most skilled of them also work with Eden Mediations Services in resolving community disputes.

San Lorenzo's Peer Conflict Management program is considered a benchmark program by the California State Department of Education and a state model by peer mediation programs in adjacent school districts. In 1996, our program was the recipient of the prestigious State Human Relations Award. It has also received plaudits from Mediation Services ofAlameda County, a non-profit organization operating in conjunction with the Alameda County Sheriff's Department and by the Joseph Mattuchi Foundation. Rebel Mediators are instrumental in helping resolve community disputes. Two of San Lorenzo's former conflict mediators. Ken Rocha and Danielle Smith, were selected as Mediations Services' first two student board members.

Mediators have strong communication skills, the respect of their peers, the ability to honor commitments and recognized leadership skills. The training they undergo, in their psychology/peer conflict management class helps students refine and enhance these attributes. They are taught life-long people skills and grow in self-confidence. Their purpose is proactive and is exhibited by its motto 'Let's Peace It Together'; it is to empower their clients with the skills needed to resolve their own problems in a peaceful manner.

The program is successful because it is a student run program. Literally, the students own it. It is the students who problem solve and suggest positive changes and the students, who decide the direction of their program. In recent years, conflict managers have trained students at other high schools and middle schools, planned and implemented National Training Associates' Kids Days (under the name. Rebel Days), run our Peer Counseling program and overseen our District TUPE-run, T.R.A.K.S.(Teen Rebels Against Kids Smoking).

Peer Conflict Management will continue to evolve as our campus continues to evolve. Mediators develop a sense of community with each other and with the students it serves. It has become one of San Lorenzo's brightest traditions and Mediators from the past and from the present feel a sense of family by having served in our program.
