Code of Ethics

The Rebel Record is an open forum for student expression. We, the Rebel Record staff, believe in the freedom of speech and will publish what we believe in; we promise to explore all sides of the story and to report fairly. We respect a person’s right to privacy but also the public’s right to the truth. We will honor the confidentiality of all subjects and respect the right of the public to have their voices heard and recognized.

Letters to Editor

The Rebel Record welcomes letters to the editor. The letter will be reviewed by the class and discussed before publication. The editors will review it for one last time and decide whether the letter will be published or not. Letters to editor must be signed when submitted to staff, but the Rebel Record honors requests to be anonymous in the paper. The paper has the right to edit letters to fit the page and if grammatically incorrect.

Gathering Sources

The sources are not chosen at random. All sources are chosen based on the connection they have to the topic. We require a minimum of 3 sources to cover all sides of the story. To meet this requirement, we suggest that at least one source is an adult. All reporters must go back and verify all quotes. When being quoted on a controversial subject, interviewee may request to be anonymous. If requested, interviewees have the right to he verify quotes before publication; otherwise it is up to editors to decide which quotes need to be verified. All adult quotes will be verified at all times.

Censorship

We are obligated to covering all ideas of the student body regardless of their opinion. The principal does not have prior review of the paper, but the Rebel Record is open to sharing with her any articles that will be printed that can be considered controversial before publication. The adviser of the Rebel Record will not censor legally protected speech or determine the content of the paper.

Placing Ads

We have ads in various sizes that companies are able to place in our paper. When a contract is made, the Rebel Record will follow through with the contract. The Rebel Record reserves the right to deny any advertisements if they have any content that is considered homophobic, religious, political, racist, sexual, violent or has moral messages. Ads should focus on merits, services, products or methods of doing business.

Finances

The Rebel Record is financed by ads, the SLIP fund, and various grants. The cost of the paper is now free to the community.

Recruitment

If you are interested in joining the Rebel Record staff you must sign up for Journalism with your counselor. Preference is given to those with letters of recommendation from their English teacher. Typically editor positions are filled by those with previous experience with the class, who also must be enrolled.
