Peer Tutoring at the Study Center

Need help with your schoolwork? The SLz Study Center, located in room D-1, is the place to go for help with assignments of any kind: homework, essays, lab write-ups, projects, test preparation, or any other questions related to your schoolwork. It's also a great place to go if you want a quiet room to study, read, use a computer, or work on an assignment. Bilingual Peer Tutors and teachers are available to help students with any academic need.

What does Peer Tutoring do?

Tutors will help any San Lorenzo student who has questions about school work. Tutors are here to help all students learn how to learn and study. Rather than giving answers, they help you to find the answers on your own.

Who are Peer Tutors?

San Lorenzo students who wish to help others will receive course credit to serve as tutors. Tutors receive special training in how to help students, especially in math and English.

When is the Study Center open for Peer Tutoring?

Monday through Thursday after school until 5:00 pm.

What else happens at the Study Center?

• Computers are available after school so that students can type papers and do research on the Internet.
• Tutors are available to peer edit essays and help students read interesting books.
• Study groups meet regularly with peer tutors to do homework together or study for tests.
• The Study Center sells basic school supplies and healthy snacks and drinks (all proceeds support the Study Center).

How can I get involved?

Students who are interested in learning to tutor should see their counselor or Mr. Cabana in D-1. Tutoring looks great on a college application or a job resume!

Parents and community members who wish to volunteer should e-mail Mr. Cabana (ccabana@slzusd.org) or call him (510-317-3000). Volunteers are needed for a variety of activities: serving as reading buddies for students, giving feedback on essays, reviewing math homework, and answering basic computer questions, for example.

The Study Center sponsors an annual college scholarship for outstanding tutors. Donations to the Study Center Scholarship Fund are always appreciated.
