San Lorenzo High School

Tardy Policy

The San Lorenzo Unified School District Board policy mandates that teachers keep track of tardies. Punctuality to class ranks as a high priority for faculty and staff. Punctuality is very important for a number of reasons:

Policy:

  • It helps students to develop the valuable life skill of being on time.
  • It allows the teacher to have an orderly start to the instructional lesson without being constantly disrupted by students entering late or making noise in the hallway.
  • It enables the school to maintain a safe and orderly campus where non-students can be readily identified and our own students come under adult supervision when class is in session.

Procedures:

  • Students are expected to be seated in the classroom with materials and ready to begin work when the tardy bell rings.
  • If a student is less than thirty (30) minutes late, he/she will receive a tardy and may be required to make up the time with his teacher at the teacher's discretion.
  • If a student is thirty (30) to sixty (60) minutes late, he/she must report to the Attendance Office for an admit slip and will have a T-30 recorded for that period. The student will be expected to go to class for the remainder of the block.
  • If a student is more than sixty (60) minutes late, he/she must report to the Attendance Office for an admit slip and will have a cut recorded for that period. However, the student will still be expected to go to class for the remainder of the block.

Tardies will be tallied each semester (9 weeks).

Consequences:

For Tardies #1 - #10, the teacher will initiate consequences which may include the following action:

  • Parent contact (by post card, letter, phone call, parent conference)
  • Same day detention during passing periods not to exceed 5 minutes
  • After-school detention with teacher, not to exceed 1 hour. (24-hour notice to student required)
  • Extra assignments
  • Loss of participation points

Administrative action at tardy #11: A teacher may refer a student to the Assistant Principal's Office on the eleventh tardy to class upon evidence of a minimum of three documented teacher initiated consequences.

  • One must be a parent contact
  • One must be a teacher assigned detention
  • Additional consequence of the teacher's choice

The Assistant Principal may enforce one or more of the following consequences:

  • Saturday School
  • Suspension from school
  • Loss of Class
  • Loss of Campus Privileges
  • A referral to the SARB Board if problems continue

Hall Sweeps:

The school administration will conduct "Hall Sweeps" on a regular basis. Any student who is out of class without a pass will receive additional disciplinary action beyond what is listed in the regular policy. This may include:

  • Saturday School
  • Detentions
  • Loss of Campus Privileges

Students who are repeatedly out of class without permission will be subject to further disciplinary action by this Administration.
